Rising Dallas Design Star Nicole Cullum Horn on The Nate Berkus Show

August 25 – DALLAS – When the phone rang and The Nate Berkus show was on the other line, Nicole Cullum Horn was thrilled. The show, hosted by Oprah Winfrey’s favorite designer, is a regular favorite of Nicole’s. She was tapped by the Dallas charityDwell with Dignity to help makeover the apartment of a mother and two young children who were relocating from a homeless shelter.  The Nate Berkus Show is highlighting the efforts of this charity to kick off their new season, and flew in their design team to partner on the project.

The episode featuring the team’s good work airs this upcoming Wednesday, August 31st at 11:00 am and 2:00 p.m. on NBC 5 in Dallas.

Nicole’s studio, Modern Relics, has gained recognition in Dallas design circles for breathing new life into outdated furniture, and for collaborations with the Fairmont Hotel and Lucia Restaurant.  When the call came Nicole was able to whip up a support team and turned out 8 pieces of furniture in less than a week to meet the Producer’s deadline.

In October 2010, Nicole’s revamped dining room chair won 2nd place in a Dwell with Dignity contest judged by a panel of well-known designers and design bloggers including Jonathan Adler and Grace Bonney of Design*Sponge.

“Refinishing a piece of furniture not only changes the piece but it can change the feel of an entire room,” says Nicole. “It allows you to reuse good furniture while creating something new and appealing at the same time. Being able to use this approach to make this family’s space feel like a home was truly gratifying.”

In addition to her custom work with Modern Relics, Nicole features affordable, upcycled pieces of furniture at her booth in Indie Genius in Oak Cliff.

The Ross-Akard Gallery

Presents

A Magnolia Gallery Retrospective

Dallas, Texas – Guest Curators Nicole Cullum Horn and Scott Horn present A Magnolia Gallery Retrospective at the Ross-Akard Gallery, inside the Fairmont Hotel at 1717 N. Akard in Dallas from April 30 – May 27, 2011.  The reception is Saturday April 30th, from 7-10 PM.  Admission to the reception is free and the art is available for viewing during gallery hours, or by contacting Bryan Embry at Bryan@rossakard.com, or visit www.rossakard.com for more info.

The Magnolia Gallery is an alternative art space inside the Magnolia Theatre in Dallas, Texas.  The gallery was born in 2002 when Sarah Jane Semrad convinced the management of the theatre to allow her to put fresh art on the walls every month.  In late 2006 she handed the reins to Nicole Cullum Horn and Scott Horn, two curators she met through Pigeon-Stone Project. Since then the Horns have had the pleasure of curating shows with over 40 artists working in a variety of media, from photography and painting to yarn and bike frames.  The gallery's unique exposure to the Magnolia's thousands of movie-goers every month draws a lineup of artists who punch far above the weight of this non-traditional space, benefitting the artists and the community in equal measure. The Magnolia has shown the work of storied veteran artists and has also held the first solo shows for artists who have gone on to other galleries and achievements. This retrospective show attempts to catalog the talent that has crossed our paths, some 22 of whom are represented in this collection from the four years the Horns have been at the wheel.  The gallery continues to focus on spotlighting local talent in the Dallas areas, and holds new shows every month.  Check out the Dallas Art News review here.

Henderson Art Project:

I had the pleasure of being asked to participate in the Henderson Art Project as a juror.  Scott Trent organized over 74 artists who submitted 113 works of art for this project.  Each juror was asked to choose 7 pieces of art for site specific location on Henderson Avenue, in Dallas Texas.  The proposed piece had to meet the requirements of public art, such as safety for the public, impact on the street, and presence and strength of expression in an urban environment.

Waste Not, Want Not
Waste Not, Want Not is a charged symbol of our struggle with water waste, personal usage, and conservation efforts in our community and nationally. A floating, oversized replica of a white bathtub drain tethered to the ponds edge with a chain made from La Reunions’ natural materials, and found trash. I would like to turn a conscientious eye towards the individuals’ daily water consumption.  Simple self-monitoring, like how you wash your dishes or shower, can make a significant impact on stabilizing our water levels and controlling our daily usage. My hope is to jumpstart a community-based conversation on little ways each person and family can use less water daily, and still maintain quality of life standards.
